Every scene in a story needs either to advance plot or reveal character -- this does a least a little of each. If you keep reading, you'll see how this scene moves the plot along (in a very minor way -- it wasn't strictly necessary), but what this scene really does is reminds us all that Hunter is a badass in his own right, without the slightest hint of self-consciousness or embarrassment.
This isn't Hunter reacting badly because he just got handed a ghostly ass-whipping. This is Hunter picking up right where he left off, getting these prisoners moving.
