I told you the pages were about to get better. I love both of these panels. I even love Will's choice to have the throwing knives angling sort of toward the left hand side of the panel -- action flows to the right, because that's the direction that we read in the West. So when action flows to the left, it indicates slowing down, getting stuck, going backward.
This is some of the wisdom I learned from reading Understanding Comics and Making Comics by Scott McCloud, two of the best books available on the medium. I'm probably about due to reread them, as a matter of fact.
Learn from the masters. You don't have to do everything that they do -- you can create new ways of doing things -- but you can usually only succeed at attempting the new when you understand the tried and true.
